Cameras, creativity and a ton of energy – that’s the best way to describe the Swiss Creator Lab at Kraftwerk Zurich. The special atmosphere was palpable right from the start: industrial charm, summer heat and the anticipation of a day full of inspiration. It was one of those days when you immediately feel: something special is about to happen. A room full of people who all share the same passion – and you’re right in the middle of it.
Of course, I arrived way too early, stood a bit lost at the entrance and wasn’t quite sure where to go. Luckily, Denny from the organizing team eventually came out and brought us in. Inside, the models were already getting ready while you could hear the hum and crackle of last-minute setup in the background. Until 17:00, the remaining creators and Sony themselves arrived. I used the time to chat with those already there – about photography, gear and all the little stories that connect us.
Once everyone had arrived, there was a short welcome – and then we were off. For many, me included, the first stop was Sony, where we could borrow cameras and, in my case, lenses. Lined up were the latest top-tier portrait and event lenses. We started casually with a few natural sets, exchanged ideas, photographed each other and shared tips. You could already feel how much energy and creativity was in the air. The summer heat did make things a bit challenging – after a short time it felt like being in a sauna. But we didn’t let that stop us and took it with humour.
As the evening progressed, coloured lighting came into play – a new layer that immediately sparked some creative ideas for me. Half-time meant outfit changes, new setups and fresh impulses. That gave the afternoon its particular character.
Working with the models was relaxed and expressive – they brought their own ideas and poses, making each set distinctive. A special highlight was the old velvet sofa: toward evening we moved it so that the last golden sun rays fell right onto it. The warm light made the fabric glow and turned the scene into an almost cinematic set. Combined with the models’ posing, the images felt both elegant and lively — a perfect closing sequence before the sun finally dipped behind the rooftops.
Afterwards we all sat down for dinner together. After the heat, the exchange and all the impressions, it was a well-rounded and relaxed wrap-up – a day that will stay in mind not only photographically but also on a human level.
