🔎 Performance Analysis
💡 Light Output
Unmodified, the Amaran 100x reaches its highest output at 5500K with 3,729 lux at a distance of 1 m (EV 10.5). Output varies considerably across colour temperatures: 6500K delivers about 10% less (3,339 lux), 3200K about 21% less (2,936 lux) and 2700K about 36% less (2,404 lux). In multi-light setups with different CCTs, this difference has to be compensated via the dimmer.
With the reflector, output rises to 30,108 lux at 5500K (EV 13.6), about eight times the bare value. That is a strong focusing effect and the basis for the power score of 91.5.
Dimming is almost perfectly linear:
| Setting | 3200K | 5500K |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 300 lx (10.2%) · 3,135 K | 369 lx (9.9%) · 5,713 K |
| 50% | 1,434 lx (48.8%) · 3,156 K | 1,832 lx (49.1%) · 5,643 K |
| 100% | 2,936 lx · 3,156 K | 3,729 lx · 5,640 K |
The colour temperature also stays stable across the dimming range, changing by only about 2 MK-1 at both settings.
Standout Features:
- ✅ Strong output with reflector: 30,108 lux at 5500K, about eight times the bare value
- ✅ Very linear dimming: 10% power ≈ 10% light, 50% ≈ 49%
- ⚠️ Large output differences between CCTs: 2700K delivers about 36% less light than 5500K
🎨 Colour Rendering (White Light)
CRI (Ra) is remarkably consistent at 97.0 to 97.1 across all colour temperatures. R9 ranges from 91 at 5500K to 98 at 6500K. At low dimming levels, red rendering drops somewhat: at 5500K and 10%, R9 is only 79 (Ra 95.1). TLCI (for information) reaches 96 to 99.
TM-30 Rf ranges from 91 to 94, Rg from 96 to 102. 2700K stands out with Rg 96: colours there are rendered slightly muted rather than saturated.
The SSI is 88 at 2700K and a good 84 at 3200K, and drops to 72 at 5500K and 68 at 6500K, the typical pattern for phosphor-converted bi-colour engines.
Standout Features:
- ✅ Very consistent CRI: Ra 97.0–97.1 at every CCT
- ✅ Good SSI at warm CCTs: 88 at 2700K, 84 at 3200K
- ⚠️ R9 drops at low dimming levels: 79 at 5500K and 10%
- ⚠️ Slightly muted colours at 2700K: Rg 96
🧪 TM-30 in Detail
TM-30 divides colours into 16 hue bins. The local chroma shift (Rcs) shows whether a hue is rendered more or less saturated than under the reference light, the local fidelity (Rf,h) how accurately it is rendered overall. Shifts of a few percent are barely visible; from around 10%, the affected hues look noticeably more intense or duller.
| CCT | Largest chroma shift (Rcs) | Lowest local fidelity (Rf,h) | Weakest sample | CES below 90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2700K | -9% yellow (bin 5) | 86 (yellow-orange and green, bins 4/7) | CES 38: Rf 75 | 30 of 99 |
| 3200K | ±5% max. (yellow, blue) | 91 (red-purple, bin 16) | CES 91: Rf 76 | 11 of 99 |
| 5500K | +10% purple (bin 15) | 86 (cyan-blue, bin 11) | CES 91: Rf 70 | 22 of 99 |
| 6500K | +11% violet (bin 14) | 84 (cyan-blue, bin 11) | CES 91: Rf 65 | 27 of 99 |
The detailed analysis shows two clear weak spots. At 2700K, the light desaturates the yellow range noticeably: yellow-orange -8%, yellow -9%, yellow-green -6% and green -5%. Green tones also show a hue shift (up to 0.08), and local fidelity drops to 86. 30 of the 99 colour samples fall below Rf 90. Warm, golden tones, wood and foliage therefore look somewhat duller than in reality at 2700K.
At 5500K and 6500K, the typical daylight pattern appears: purple (+10%) and violet (+11%) are oversaturated, while fidelity in cyan to cyan-blue drops to 84–88. Blue-green to cyan-blue tones also shift slightly in hue (up to 0.11 at 6500K). At 6500K, the weakest colour sample only reaches Rf 65.
3200K is the most balanced setting: all hue bins stay within ±5%, local fidelity stays at 91 or higher, and only 11 samples fall below Rf 90.
Skin tones in the orange-red and orange bins (2 and 3) remain largely unaffected from 3200K upwards (Rf,h 95–97). At 2700K, orange drops to Rf,h 90, so skin tones there look slightly less accurate.
The spectrum peaks at 634–638 nm in the warm settings and at 451–453 nm (blue pump) in the daylight settings.
Standout Features:
- ✅ Balanced at 3200K: all hue bins within ±5%, Rf,h ≥ 91
- ✅ Skin tones stable from 3200K: bins 2/3 at Rf,h 95–97
- ⚠️ Yellows muted at 2700K: up to -9%, 30 samples below Rf 90
- ⚠️ Daylight pattern: purple/violet +10–11%, cyan-blue Rf,h down to 84
🌡️ CCT Accuracy
The deviation in Mired (MK-1) is more meaningful than the raw Kelvin difference, since the Kelvin scale is not linear:
| Target CCT | Measured | Deviation | MK-1 | Duv |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2700 K | 2,728 K | +28 K | 3.80 | +0.00495 |
| 3200 K | 3,156 K | -44 K | 4.36 | -0.00060 |
| 5500 K | 5,640 K | +140 K | 4.51 | -0.00214 |
| 6500 K | 6,749 K | +249 K | 5.68 | +0.00015 |
The Amaran 100x stays below 6 MK-1 at every colour temperature, well below the threshold of around 10 MK-1 at which a shift becomes perceptible. 3200K is slightly warmer than set, the daylight settings slightly cooler.
The tint is very neutral at 3200K and 6500K. At 2700K, a Duv of +0.0050 indicates a slight green tint that can show on white walls or neutral backgrounds. At 5500K and 10%, Duv shifts slightly towards magenta (-0.0031).
Standout Features:
- ✅ Consistently precise CCT: 3.80–5.68 MK-1
- ✅ Stable across dimming: about 2 MK-1 between 10% and 100%
- ⚠️ Slight green tint at 2700K: Duv +0.0050
✅ Strengths
- Precise colour temperatures → Below 6 MK-1 at every CCT, stable across the dimming range
- Very consistent CRI → Ra 97.0–97.1, R9 91–98 at full output
- Strong output with reflector → 30,108 lux at 5500K, power score 91.5
- Linear dimming → 10% power ≈ 10% light
- Balanced 3200K setting → SSI 84, all TM-30 hue bins within ±5%
⚠️ Weaknesses
- Large output differences between CCTs → 2,404 lux at 2700K vs. 3,729 lux at 5500K (about 36% less)
- Weaker warm white at 2700K → Yellow range up to -9% saturation, Rg 96, 30 of 99 samples below Rf 90, Duv +0.0050
- Daylight spectrum → SSI 72 and 68, purple/violet oversaturated, cyan-blue Rf,h down to 84
- R9 drops at low dimming levels → 79 at 5500K and 10%
📉 Practical Applications
Ideal for: → Interviews and talking heads at 3200K: the most balanced setting, stable skin tones → YouTube and content production: consistent CRI, linear dimming → Key light with reflector: strong output for focused setups
Use with caution: → Multi-light setups with mixed CCTs: large output differences → Warm looks at 2700K: muted yellows and a slight green tint → Spectrally demanding daylight work: SSI 68–72 → Very low brightness levels at 5500K: R9 drops to 79
📌 Conclusion
The Amaran 100x is a solid bi-colour COB light with precise colour temperatures, very consistent CRI values, linear dimming and strong output with the reflector. Its best setting is 3200K, where SSI, TM-30 and CCT accuracy all come together well.
The detailed analysis reveals the limits: at 2700K, yellows and greens lose saturation and the white point has a slight green tint, while daylight settings show the usual oversaturation in purple and violet plus weaker cyan rendering. Combined with the large output differences between colour temperatures, the 100x is a reliable all-rounder for content and interviews, but not a light for spectrally critical work.
