Godox ML40Bi – Technical Analysis
If you’re looking for one of the smallest COB lights on the market, you’ll likely come across the Godox ML40Bi. With its built-in battery, USB-C power input, and palm-sized housing, it’s clearly designed for creators who want to keep their lighting kit as compact as possible.
After spending some time with it, it also became clear that the ML40Bi isn’t trying to be a spec killer or replace a traditional key light. Instead, its biggest strength is fitting into places where larger COB fixtures simply can’t. Godox provided this light for review, but all conclusions are based entirely on my own measurements and real-world testing.
My overall impression: the ML40Bi isn’t a replacement for a conventional COB key light. Instead, it’s a highly specialized tool for mobile productions, hair lights, rim lights, and compact accent lighting.

✅ Strengths
Extremely compact form factor
→ The ML40Bi is one of the smallest COB fixtures in its output class. It’s especially useful as a hair light, rim light, or hidden accent light where space is limited.
Flexible USB-C power input
→ The ML40Bi reaches full output using a standard 45 W USB-C power supply or power bank. Even more importantly, it can also operate from lower-powered USB-C sources, automatically reducing its maximum brightness instead of shutting down. This makes it compatible with a wide range of chargers and power banks.
Magnetic accessory system
→ The reflector mounts quickly and also provides attachment points for Godox’s magnetic accessories. In practice, this makes switching between setups fast and convenient.
Good color quality
→ TM-30 and SSI performance is solid overall. Especially at warmer color temperatures, the ML40Bi delivers clean, natural-looking light suitable for professional video production.
Excellent as a hair, rim, or ambient light
→ Thanks to its compact dimensions, the fixture can be hidden almost anywhere, making it ideal for accent lighting where larger COB fixtures simply won’t fit.
⚠️ Weaknesses
Short battery runtime
→ The internal battery lasts approximately 40 minutes at full output. Fortunately, the ML40Bi can continue operating from a USB-C power bank or charger. Even if the power source provides less than 45 W, the light will continue running at a proportionally reduced maximum brightness.
Noticeable fan noise
→ The cooling system works reliably but is louder than many competing fixtures. This can become distracting during interviews or other sound-critical productions.
No power-on after power loss
→ Following a power interruption, the light does not automatically turn back on. Users relying on switched outlets or smart plugs may find this limiting.
No tilt bracket included
→ Godox does not include a traditional yoke or tilt bracket with the ML40Bi. This adds extra cost and makes mounting on standard light stands less convenient.
Not compatible with the Godox Bowens adapter
→ Unlike larger models in the ML series, the ML40Bi cannot be used with Godox’s Bowens mount adapter. As a result, users are limited to accessories specifically designed for this fixture, reducing compatibility with existing lighting equipment.
Plastic construction
→ The housing feels well assembled and reasonably premium, but it doesn’t inspire the same confidence as an all-metal fixture and is unlikely to withstand years of heavy rental use.
Slight magenta shift at higher color temperatures
→ While overall color rendering is good, measurements show a consistently negative DUV. As the color temperature increases, a subtle magenta tint becomes more noticeable. It’s not a major issue, but it should be considered when matching the ML40Bi with other high-end fixtures.
📉 Practical Applications
Well suited for
→ Hair lights and rim lights
→ Ambient and background lighting
→ Small product photography and video
→ Mobile content creation
→ Travel and run-and-gun productions
Less suited for
→ Soft key lighting
→ Long productions running only on the internal battery
→ Sound-critical interviews
→ Users heavily invested in the Bowens ecosystem
→ Setups requiring maximum modifier flexibility
📌 Verdict
The Godox ML40Bi follows a very different philosophy from traditional COB lights. Instead of trying to be a universal lighting solution, it focuses on delivering as much output as possible in an extremely compact package. Within the ML lineup, it complements the larger models well and is aimed primarily at creators looking for a lightweight secondary fixture.
My measurements show good overall color quality with solid TM-30 and SSI performance. In real-world use, the ML40Bi stands out thanks to its compact design, flexible USB-C power input, and practical magnetic accessory system. As a hair light, rim light, or small ambient fixture, it performs exactly as intended.
That said, buyers should be aware of its compromises. Battery life is limited to around 40 minutes at full power, the cooling fan is relatively loud, and there’s no power-on-after-power-loss function. The lack of an included tilt bracket and incompatibility with the Godox Bowens adapter further limit its flexibility. Additionally, a slight magenta shift becomes noticeable at higher color temperatures, particularly when matching it with other well-calibrated fixtures.
If you’re looking for an ultra-compact secondary light for mobile productions, the ML40Bi is a well-designed and practical tool. However, if you need a versatile primary COB light or rely heavily on Bowens modifiers, one of the larger models in the ML series will likely be the better choice.
